Wood and canvas canoes were first made in the 1800s, evolving from Native American birchbark designs. As modern materials became available and production processes improved, wood and canvas canoes gained favor with consumers, being more durable and requiring less maintenance than their birchbark predecessors.
Throughout the century, hundreds of thousands of canoes have been produced here at Old Town. Although the company has expanded into other watercraft and other materials to better serve our customers over the years, the classic wood and canvas canoe is our heritage. It is what defines us, our essence.
All of our Classic Wood canoes are hand-crafted on forms that have been used for generations. All models are available in canvas or fiberglass.

Trapper

Originally designed for fur trappers in need of a swift, lightweight boat to cover open water quickly and portage easily between backcountry streams. Quickly became a staple for many canoeists. Lightweight, durable and stable.

Guide

The design Maine guides find most useful in the backcountry. Low profile to duck winds. Long flat floor for shallow draft and a big cargo space.

Molitor

Long decks, outside stems and oval mahogany gunwales create a frame so strong no thwarts are needed.
